Vehicle Registration Plates Of Florida - Vehicle Registration Florida
The U.S. state of Florida first required its residents to register their motor vehicles and display license plates in 1918.
Passenger plates 1918 to present
In 1956, the U.S. states and Canadian provinces came to an agreement with the Automobile Manufacturers Association that standardized the size for license plates for vehicles, except those for motorcycles, at six inches in height by twelve inches in width, with standardized mounting holes. The 1955 (dated 1956) issue was the first Florida license plate that complied with these standards.
Non-passenger and specialty plates
Non-passenger
The state issues many non-passenger types of license plates to various vehicle classes and types.
Specialty
Florida has offered a wide variety of specialty license plates to its motorists, most for an extra fee. Only a few of these types are no longer issued; a number of other types have been redesigned since they were first issued.
